Life in Finland
You’ve heard it’s the winner of some happiness competition, home to the Moomins, Santa Claus and introverts. The land of a thousand lakes, 3 million saunas and what feels like a billion mosquitoes. But what’s life in Finland really like?
Find out in our Life in Finland section. Here, you’ll find in-depth guides and straightforward how-to’s to help you get started and settled in Finland. We’ll talk about everything from moving, renting and shopping to applying for your first Henkilötunnus card. Learn what it takes to live and thrive in this Nordic country.
We’ll share our experiences as a native Finn returning after 10 years abroad and a non-EU new arrival. We’ll share our wins and our struggles, what works and what doesn’t.
Even though Finland is a lovely place to live, actually living here is not without its challenges. A difficult job market, tough language and the initial awkwardness of integration tend to be masked by positive social media campaigns and news articles. All is not always well in Moomin Valley. We want to share what life is actually like, not what it’s presented as online, so you can be more informed about your choice to move and live here.
And since I (Katlyn) am still new-ish and my situation is still evolving, I’ll share what I’ve learned since arriving here and what I’m still finding out. That way, you’ll get relevant, up-to-date information.
So, if you still want to learn more about Finland, are planning to move, or you’re already here and looking for guidance, read through this section. Find out what life in Finland is all about.
